Jessica Qiu

Jessica started skating at age five after watching a Friday evening session with Michael Weiss and Tommy Steenberg. Once she made up her mind to pursue figure skating, Jessica’s natural ability helped her land her axel when she was six. At 11, she earned her first USFSA Gold Medal by passing the Senior Moves test. In her first Qualifying event as a Juvenile Girl, Jessica placed 4th in the initial round and fifth in the circular round, earning her a place in the final round at the 2008 South Atlantic Regional Championships. Two years later at Regionals, Jessica placed 2nd in the qualifying event and made it to the Intermediate Ladies final. Since 2007, she has competed at the South Atlantics Regional Competition for 6 consecutive years. This past season, Jessica was a Junior Ladies competitor and placed 3rd at both Skate Wilmington and the Potomac Open.  She took another step up the podium by placing 2nd in the Junior Ladies free skate at Falling Leaves in Richmond, VA. After the 2013 South Atlantic Regionals, Jessica passed her Senior Free Skate test and earned her second USFSA Gold Medal. Jessica’s goal is to continue her rigorous training schedule and hopefully land a full set of triple jumps under the guidance of her head coach, Sandy Hurtubise and technical coach, Nick Perna.

Currently a Junior at WT Woodson High School, Jessica has been taking a very challenging course load including AP Calculus BC, AP World History and AP Psychology. Although not completely decided yet, Jessica hopes to study Computer Engineering in college. Along with figure skating, Jessica has played violin for the past 7 years and is currently a member of the Woodson High School Chamber Orchestra. Jessica has also worked as a skating ambassador for Fairfax Ice Arena and enjoys helping new skaters learn and progress.
