Melanie Brookes-Weiss bio

I was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I attended university at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, in California. After university, I married my husband David and we moved to the East Coast. I was always a horse back rider and had ridden for years in South Africa and in California and played Polo for my college. I rode again on the east coast and taught riding lessons. Horses were always my thing… not ice skating!

I work full time as a trainer on Intellectual Property. I am very passionate about cheetah conservation and I serve on the Board of Trustees for the Cheetah Conservation Fund, which is incredibly rewarding. When you’re tired of talking about skating, boots and blades, please ask me about Cheetahs!

My children started skating together at Fairfax Ice Arena. I felt that ice skating was a wonderful sport to learn, something you could go and do for fun as a teen or as an adult. Both kids were skating and the next thing, we have a coach and then we’re doing the little ISI competition. We then joined Theater on Ice, which is how we first came to join SCNV in 2015. We have loved every aspect of Theater on Ice. As members of SCNV we have actively volunteered for several years at the Cardinal Classic – my husband doing the heavy lifting for hospitality and me doing ice monitoring and announcing.

When not at the rink, we reside in Falls Church with two cats and a dog.
