Testing Dates Update!
The July test session is now scheduled for Sunday, July 14th (not July 13th). The August test session is now scheduled for Sunday, August 11th (not August 10th). Volunteers are needed to help our wonderful judges and skaters on both Sunday mornings. For more information, please contact testchair@scnv.org.

Theatre On Ice Sendoffs! June 16th at PWIC
The Virginia Ice Theatre sendoffs is set for Sunday, June 16th at PWIC. Exhibition is free, so please come on out and support TOI!

Did you know?!
For skaters at the no-test level and above, the well-balanced program requirements and rules changes for each year are usually implemented on July 1 of each year but are announced in the spring pending approval at the May Governing Council. Skaters and their coaches should always be looking for new rules updates on the US Figure Skating website.

Would you like to try your hand at judging figure skaters?
The Washington Figure Skating Club (WFSC) will offer “Introduction to Judging,” and event tailored to experienced skaters ages 16 to 22 years.

This introductory seminar will take place on Sunday, June 2nd at SkateQuest Reston from 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM, and is a no-risk way to learn more about the process of judging and becoming a judge.

The session will include the following:

  • Mock judging of actual tests
  • IJS competition judging — putting you on the spot and discussing the results
  • Information on becoming a judge
  • How to register to be a trial judge

Space is limited. You must register if you plan to attend. For questions, please contact wfscmiftest@gmail.com.

Only 2 sessions remain! The Spring Session continues until June 10th for both Joe Griffin’s Off Ice class, plus Jonathon and Nadia Hodgkinson’s Components class.

We uses the responses to publish our annual “Whatever” publication full of fun facts and stories. Please follow instructions to submit digital photos for our video montage. In addition to your RSVP online, your check must be received (by Renee) by May 24th so do not delay!

SCNV Collegiate Scholarship applications due April 21 (extended from April 15)
Each year, SCNV provides scholarship aid to club members who are graduating High School
Seniors who meet certain criteria. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a Primary Member (full or associate) of SCNV in the current year;
  • SCNV has been the skater’s home club for at least the three previous years, one year of which the skater must have subscribed to Club Ice (Theatre on Ice or Membership in National Blades is considered subscribed);
  • Be a member in good standing with U.S. Figure Skating;
  • Be a high school graduating senior, and;
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-­‐year or four-­‐year college, university or vocational-­‐technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.

If you meet these criteria or have a friend or family member who does, please visit the Collegiate Scholarship page under SCNV membership for more information or to apply. Applications are due Sunday,
April 21st

National Blades
National Blades synchronized skating will again proudly represent SCNV in the 2019-20 season. We still have spaces left on our Open Juvenile and Pre Juvenile teams.
Please come out and see how much fun representing our club as a synchro team member can be!
Open try out dates remain on Wednesday, April 24th at 6:50 to 7:50 PM, and on Sunday, April 28th at 3:40 to 5:00 PM at the Prince William Ice Center (PWIC). Please contact Teresa Yuengert for further information.

Did you know that the Axel jump was created by Norwegian figure skater Axel Paulsen in 1882? It was the first jump to take off forward and rotate 1 and 1/2 revolutions.

SCNV will be hosting the 4th annual Cardinal Classic Competition on Friday, April 5th to Sunday, April 7th, 2019. This is a 3-day event that includes Singles, Showcase, Compete USA, and Theater on Ice events. The total number of volunteers needed is for three days.

Come watch Dumbo with the Junior Board!
The Junior Board is inviting you to see Dumbo on Saturday, March 30th at 1:50pm at Regal Fairfax Towne Center 10 (4110 West Ox Road, Suite 12110, Fairfax, VA 22033) You can pre-purchase your tickets online using your preferred retailer. We are going to try to sit in and around Row C. This is the opening weekend for Dumbo, so pre-purchasing is recommended! Hope to see you there!

What is a S.T.A.R.S. Combine?
S.T.A.R.S. (Standardized Testing of Athleticism to Recognize Skaters) is a fun, one-day off-ice testing event that provides skaters and coaches with specific information about the skaters’ athletic abilities, specifically those related to on-ice skills. The combine consists of 15 tests in the areas of agility/flexibility/coordination, strength/power and flexibility. All participants will take part in a dynamic warm-up class, attend a sports science seminar and receive a detailed athlete report at the conclusion of the combine. S.T.A.R.S. combines are open to U.S. Figure Skating athletes ages 6+ who have passed the Pre-Preliminary Moves in the Field test.
What is the High Performance Movement Screen?
All S.T.A.R.S. combines are held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating High Performance Movement Screen (HPMS). The HPMS is a group of evaluations designed to give athletes, coaches and parents information in three key areas: mobility, stability and symmetry. Participating athletes receive a detailed report flagging areas of concern as well as video-based feedback for corrective exercises. The HPMS is open to U.S. Figure Skating athletes who have passed the Juvenile Moves in the Field test as well as adult skaters.

The Spring Session continues until June 10th for both Joe Griffin’s Off Ice class, plus Jonathon and Nadia Hodgkinson’s Components class. Rolling registration with prorated pricing continues for both classes and the Freestyle session.
