Skate Clinic With Alissa Czisny
Registration is now open for our Friday, November 2 Clinic with Alissa Czisny. Whether you saw her in Stars on Ice, while she was winning the 2010 Grand Prix, US Nationals twice, or Skate Canada twice, you know she is an incredibly artistic skater, known for her phenomenal spins and spirals.
We’ve made this clinic affordable ($60 for non-Hershey members) and appropriate to three skating levels to allow your skaters to benefit. Register at www.hersheyfigureskating.org. Levels are based on Free Style tests (not Moves)

  • Level 1 – Pre-Freeskate to No Test – 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM
  • Level 2 – Pre-Preliminary to Pre-Juvenile – 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM
  • Level 3 – Juvenile to Senior – 11:15 AM to 12:45 PM

Note: this is an all-ages clinic. Adults are welcome if they have comparable testing levels.
Level 1 is a great opportunity for newer and younger skaters to get a taste of a clinic.
All three levels will work on skills appropriate to the testing level.
Alissa will be working primarily on spins with some additional skills as time allows.
Coaches are welcome to attend ice-side.

Did you know?!
Ice skating probably developed in Scandinavia as early as 1000 BCE, the first skates being made from shank or rib bones of elk, oxen, reindeer, and other animals. It is not known when the metal runner was introduced, but early Dutch prints depict skates with metal blades. Until the middle of the 19th century the metal portion of the skate was fastened to a wooden base or footplate and the whole of the skate was fastened to the foot with leather thongs or straps. A major improvement came from the United States in 1850 when E.W. Bushnell of Philadelphia introduced the all-steel skate, which replaced the cumbersome wooden footplate. The main developments in the figure skate after 1900 were the addition of the toe pick, a group of saw-like teeth located at the toe of the blade, which enabled skaters to obtain better purchase in the ice when doing certain jumps, and the innovation of the “closed-toe” blade of one-piece steel, which added strength to the skate and permitted a much lighter-weight blade.

Athlete SafeSport
All athletes 18 years or older competing on a team (i.e. synchro, dance, pairs, theatre, etc.) with minor athletes are required to complete the online SafeSport training in order to participate in the upcoming season. Athletes younger than 18 may take the training with the consent of a parent. This training will be an annual requirement moving forward.

All athletes, as outlined above, who do not complete the SafeSport training by their 18th birthday will be SafeSport non-compliant on their 18th birthday. The athlete will not be SafeSport compliant until they have completed the training and their Members Only portal reflects completion. Accordingly, we encourage any athlete who is currently age 17 to seek parental consent to take the training early.

SafeSport Training Instructions

  1. Enter your Members Only profile at: www.usfsaonline.org
  2. Access your “Member Profile” under “Account” and click on the “Compliance” tab.
  3. Click the red “Begin” button next to SafeSport Online Training and follow the prompts. This will ensure your training records are merged with your profile.
  4. Complete the training and subsequent quiz in it entirety.
  5. If you have issues with completing the training, reach out to safesport@usfigureskating.org

If an athlete is not required to complete the training this year, we suggest parents or guardians offer them the youth SafeSport training which is formatted to be age specific. These courses require parental consent and can be found at www.athletesafety.org.

SCNV offers multiple types of recognitions for our skaters. First, we recognize all passed tests on our website and free patches for our full members. Those who pass a gold test are honored at our banquet and awarded a the USFS gold medal. Second, we honor our academic stars in 8th grade and above, the application for the academic scholar awards is usually available in July/August and those who qualify are recognized at our South Atlantic send-offs event in September. At our banquet in June we recognize both adult and junior skaters for outstanding achievements in testing and competing with our named trophies.
