Athlete SafeSport
All athletes 18 years or older competing on a team (i.e. synchro, dance, pairs, theatre, etc.) with minor athletes are required to complete the online SafeSport training in order to participate in the upcoming season. Athletes younger than 18 may take the training with the consent of a parent. This training will be an annual requirement moving forward.

All athletes, as outlined above, who do not complete the SafeSport training by their 18th birthday will be SafeSport non-compliant on their 18th birthday. The athlete will not be SafeSport compliant until they have completed the training and their Members Only portal reflects completion. Accordingly, we encourage any athlete who is currently age 17 to seek parental consent to take the training early.

SafeSport Training Instructions

  1. Enter your Members Only profile at: www.usfsaonline.org
  2. Access your “Member Profile” under “Account” and click on the “Compliance” tab.
  3. Click the red “Begin” button next to SafeSport Online Training and follow the prompts. This will ensure your training records are merged with your profile.
  4. Complete the training and subsequent quiz in it entirety.
  5. If you have issues with completing the training, reach out to safesport@usfigureskating.org

If an athlete is not required to complete the training this year, we suggest parents or guardians offer them the youth SafeSport training which is formatted to be age specific. These courses require parental consent and can be found at www.athletesafety.org.

Did You Know?!
Swedes won the first four Olympic gold medals and a silver the next time. Unfortunately, they haven’t won an Olympic medal of any kind since then. That’s a drought of 20 Olympics and 90 years. On the other hand, Swedish Fish candy were developed in the late 1950s and are still popular and delicious today.

Did You Know?!
Figure skating is called “figure skating” because, years ago, designs were skated on clean ice in the shape of a figure eight. These designs were called figures. Compulsory figures were eliminated from all official figure skating competitions in the early 1990s, and 1992 was the first Winter Olympics to not include compulsory figures at ice skating events. Today, tracing figures is no longer part of the competition.

Did You Know?!
The first figure skating club was founded in 1742 in Edinburgh, Scotland and was comprised entirely of men. In 1865, The Skating Club of Edinburgh finally allowed female members to join the club. In order to be accepted into the Edinburgh Figure Skating Club in the mid-1850s, that members were required to be able to skate complete circles on one foot in a figure eight pattern and then jump over one hat, two hats, and three hats with skates on!

Did You Know?!
In 1928, when Sonja Henie was fifteen years old, she became the youngest woman ever to win an Olympic figure skating gold medal. Henie held that title for seventy years until Tara Lipinski of the USA won Olympic gold in 1998. Lipinski was two months younger than Henie when she won gold in 1998 at the Olympic Winter Games which took place in Nagano, Japan. Sonja Henie won the ladies Olympic figure skating title three times. Her first Olympic gold was in 1928 followed by more wins in 1932 and in 1936. Before Sonja Henie appeared in the figure skating world, female ice skaters wore black figure skates. Henie introduced the idea that women and girls should wear white ice skating boots. Ice skating attire until Sonja Henie’s time was similar to street clothing. Sonja introduced the idea of short and beautiful figure skating skirts and dresses.
